A Light in the Dark

Light: Integral, important and essential

Light is an integral part of the life of people, animals and plants. If there was no light, nearly all life forms would be threatened with extinction. In addition, light is important in every situation in life from the workplace, living space or public places. Light sets the scene, makes work possible and creates joy through exciting design.

In order to create the right lighting for you and your home, EGLO has the best lighting technology information from light distribution to wavelength, from colour spectrum to colour rendering.

Let's Go Surfing

To date, researchers do not agree on whether light is electromagnetic particles or waves. Just as a surfer rides elegantly over waves, so does light, only light does not need a guiding medium. There are no waves without water, but it is different with light - if light spreads, an electromagnetic field is created, at least that is what the theory of light particle details. The electromagnetic field is created by the collision of light, where particles are released by the impact. This is how solar systems are created on a larger scale.

The Speed of Light

Light spreads in a straight line and always comes from a light source, be that the sun or your lightbulb. The light source produces many individual rays of light, and when these rays hit an object, they cast a shadow.

The speed of light is an unimaginable 300,000 km/s, which moves much faster than any ocean wave. In contrast to the sea, we are not able to see every wave in light and we cannot perceive light waves. The human eye is only able to recognise a certain wavelength and process it in the brain. In more technical terms, all light waves that have a wavelength between 380 nanometres and 700 nanometres are visible to us.

The Colourful Miracle

Depending on the wavelength, our eyes interpret different colours. At a lower wavelength, we perceive colours such as purple, blue and green. High wavelength is perceived as red, orange and yellow.

How we see objects depends on how much and what light is reflected or absorbed on its surface. The red stoplight at the traffic lights mainly reflects red components of the light and alerts us to stop, as most other light colours are absorbed. If we illuminate the traffic lights with UV light, then not much of the red can be seen, because the light source must also contain radiation components of the respective colour. Therefore, when selecting lights and lightbulbs, care must be taken to ensure you have the right colour temperature to create a pleasant atmosphere in the room.
